Filament cost per gram calculator

Convert spool price into a reusable cost per gram and use it to price each print more accurately.

Find the cost per gram

A filament cost per gram calculator starts with the actual price of the spool divided by its usable weight.

Formula: Cost per gram = spool price / spool weight. Filament cost = grams used x cost per gram.

Worked example

If a 1,000 gram spool costs $24.00, the cost per gram is $0.024.

A print using 165 grams of that filament costs 165 x 0.024 = $3.96 in material before electricity, labor, or wear.

PrintMate uses that same logic while also tracking your inventory so the spool is not just a number in a formula.

Use inventory to keep the math accurate

When you track remaining spool weight, the cost per gram stays useful for future jobs because you know what is still available.

Common questions

3D printing cost questions

Do I use gross or net spool weight?

Use the net usable filament weight, not the packaging weight, unless your supplier prices by total packaged weight.

What about waste or purge material?

Add purge, support, and failed-print allowance if they are part of your normal workflow.

Can PrintMate calculate filament cost per gram?

Yes. PrintMate calculates filament cost based on spool price, usage, and remaining inventory.
